a better education for visually impaired children

A request under the Freedom of Information Act to the Northumberland County Council for a list of mainstream primary and secondary schools in the county with facilities for the visually impaired drew the following response:

If your request is related to schools that have designated resources in the form of a special unit, then the answer is that Northumberland County Council does not have such a facility. A combination of parental preference for local mainstream schools and the low incidence of VI has not led us to develop such provision. The main body of population in Northumberland is in the South East of the county and close enough to Newcastle special unit provision, from whom we have purchased a small number of places over the years.
