a better education for visually impaired children

A request under the Freedom of Information Act to Hull City Council for a list of mainstream primary and secondary schools in the city with facilities for the visually impaired drew the following response:

I confirm there are no specifically designated mainstream or special schools with support units for visually impaired pupils. As discussed, the policy of the four unitary authorities for whom the service works under a joint arrangement (these authorities being Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, North Lincolnshire Council and North East Lincolnshire Council) is to support all visually impaired pupils, irrespective of the severity of their impairment, in their local community schools. The Educational Service for Hearing and Vision (ESHV) works in professional partnership with schools and parents to ensure all appropriate support and resources are available to pupils within their local school. The unitary authorities therefore provide facilities within schools which reflect the intensity of the needs of the pupil with visual impairment and as you will appreciate, this varies from pupil to pupil.
